JPS News Flash

As of July 1, 2002, the bar will be raised for standards in the manufacturing of fire and fire/smoke dampers. The product will be changing significantly and will affect all dampers intended to be used for fire and/or fire/smoke protection and that have the potential to be subjected to air flow. The new standards will affect all products of this type manufactured as of July 1, 2002.

Click HERE for a chart that compares the old and new test standards.

Q:  Why were the new standards developed?

A:  ASHRAE Research Project #680, Fire/Smoke Damper Study to Determine Dynamic

Closure Capability and Leakage Performance, revealed that an improved method to

rate fire, smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers was needed. UL, AMCA, and

ASHRAE, worked together to develop these new standards that will increase the safety

and reliability of these critical products.

Q:  Who is affected by the new standards?

A:  Everyone involved with these products is affected. Manufacturers must comply with the

new standards by July 1, 2002, and have been developing and testing their dampers to

meet the new standards since the new requirements were issued on June 1, 1999.

Engineers are affected since they will only be able to spec the products meeting the new

standards after July 1, 2002.
